Here\u2019s why investors should look towards EV start ups:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ONE MOTO are driving towards IPO on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/dubai-financial-market_2\/\"><strong>Dubai Financial Market<\/strong><\/a> NASDAQ by Q1 2024, and this article from <a href=\"https:\/\/observer-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/observer.com\/2020\/08\/electric-vehicle-ipo-reverse-merger-spac-lordstown-motor\/amp\/\"><strong>observer.com<\/strong><\/a> explains more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few months, a slew of electric vehicle startups with little track record of making cars have sent the stock of barely known \u201cblank check\u201d companies, or special purpose acquisition firms (SPACs), soaring by forming reverse mergers with these companies to raise funds from the public market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, electric truck startup <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2020\/06\/lordstown-motors-electric-pickup-endurance-former-gm-plant-ohio\/\"><strong>Lordstown Motors<\/strong><\/a>, a year-old company born out of an abandoned General Motors plant in northeastern Ohio, announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200803005226\/en\/Lordstown-Motors-Corp.-List-NASDAQ-Merger-DiamondPeak\"><strong>go public<\/strong><\/a> on NASDAQ through a merger with a SPAC called DiamondPeak Holdings in a deal that values Lordstown at $1.6 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news instantly sent DiamondPeak shares jump 30 percent Monday morning and the shares of Lordstown\u2019s former parent company, Workhorse (which still owns 10 percent of Lordstown), up 11 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That chain of events sounds extremely similar to what happened to <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2020\/07\/electric-vehicle-fisker-reverse-ipo-spartan-energy-stock\/\"><strong>Los Angeles-based EV startup Fisker<\/strong><\/a> just a month ago. In July, Fisker announced a reverse merger with Spartan Energy Acquisition Corp, a SPAC backed by private equity giant Apollo Global Management, to go public. The announcement sent Spartan Energy\u2019s stock jumping 20 percent in two days in a row.A month earlier, Tesla\u2019s hydrogen rival, <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2020\/06\/nikola-founder-interview-hydrogen-electric-vehicle-tesla-stock\/\"><strong>electric truck startup Nikola<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2020\/03\/tesla-rival-hydrogen-truck-nikola-plan-ipo-nasdaq\/\"><strong>went down a similar path,<\/strong><\/a> going public through a merger with a SPAC called VectoIQ. Is this answering the question, Why investors should look towards EV start ups? Let\u2019s continue to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LATE LAST YEAR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Space tourism startup <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2020\/07\/virgin-galactic-spaceship-cabin-design-reveal\/\"><strong>Virgin Galactic<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2019\/07\/richard-branson-virgin-galactic-goes-public\/\"><strong>went public through the same structure<\/strong><\/a> with Social Capital Hedosophia, a SPAC owned by billionaire venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the companies mentioned above has a viable product or service just yet. But through such reverse mergers they were (or would be) able to raise massive funds from public market investors, who are typically more averse to risky investments than private investors, to back product development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nikola, for example, raised more than $700 million in fresh capital through the merger with VectoIQ. Fisker expects to raise $1 billion when the deal completes to fund the engineering of its electric SUV, Ocean. And Lordstown is looking to raise up to $675 million to fund the production of its \u201cEndurance\u201d pickup truck, an electric rival of Ford\u2019s F-150.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of institutional investors, including Fidelity, BlackRock and GM, are also participating in the Lordstown deal. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A SPAC is a special type of company that goes public for the sole purpose of buying another company regardless of how much funding it raises through an IPO\u2014which is why a SPAC is also known as a \u201cblank-check\u201d company. When an acquisition target is identified, investors often engage in a buying rush and send the stock up, looking to cash out after the merger is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHAT\u2019S NEXT?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With these facts \u2013 out there \u2013 for consideration, we believe the bubble of the dominant and successful micro-mobility start ups has ceased. \u201cStudying the business model of Lime, Bird, Circ, Tier amongst others was never set out to yield longevity. They didn\u2019t address the challenges and solve the problem of long-term mobility, instead this cool, new-gen fad has led to a wash of smaller market players to realise the faults and approach with a sustainable model \u2013 which I\u2019ve no doubt will succeed.
